Herewith, my first weekly roundup of some of the beautiful, curious and wonderful things that have caught my eye lately.

earth & water

August 7, 2020

Here, at Hotel Mezzatorre in southern Italy, is one of my favourite palettes; various shades of terracotta, stone and sea blue. These are the colours I grew up with, so my draw to them is innate. Of course, if I were being super particular, I’d plant a heap of pink bougainvillea in the pot.

to the boat house

May 5, 2020

I came across this gorgeous boat house just minutes from the shore of Sydney’s Palm Beach today. It’s the perfect hideaway, and so much cooler than any souped up yacht. I love the idea of a floating house, hopping in a row boat to go to the market. Forget showers. I’d take salty baths, daily.

sicilia

March 3, 2020

This room is too beautiful to not share; the weathered, fresco-ed walls, the beautiful tile and kilims, and that chandelier that looks like it landed here from another planet. I love all the delicate details, lemons and baby’s breath at the vanity, and the floppy white tulips on the bench. I’ve never been to Sicily, but I’d be quite happy camping out at a palazzo like this one for a day or two.

home for the holiday

October 9, 2019

Good golly, look at this holiday home in Menorca! The tiles, the tiles, the tiles! I love all the curves in the ceilings, and the palette throughout –– dusty rose, rusts and moody blues –– is beautiful. There’s a pottery studio on the property, and a petanque pitch, too. Pine trees and hammocks are in abundance.

staying power

September 26, 2019

My first Birkenstocks –– a brown, single strap –– travelled through Thailand, Laos and Vietnam with me.  I climbed mountains in them, rafted down the Mekong in them, and waded through the thigh high floods of Ho Chi Minh City in them. Somewhere in our photos, is a picture of me en route back to Canada, wearing my trusty Birks and thick fuscia socks. These days, I choose my Birkenstocks over any other shoe. And I have many. I’ll even throw wool socks on so I can wear them through the months of October and November. I’m excited to see how the brand’s diversified, and evolved. And if there’s any doubt about that, just check out their exquisite new showroom in Paris. The originals might not give a damn, but this place is sure to attract new customers in droves.

pool party

September 23, 2019

I love these pictures by Joanne Ho, of tiny bathers frolicking on what looks like a Greek Island. I like that they’re all wearing bright, patterned suits and that some of them even have pink or turquoise hair. There’s something so simple and idyllic about this work. It’s just the sort of thing we should all hang in our bathrooms, so we can drift off to warm and whimsical places when the cold is wearing us down.

laguna verde

September 5, 2019

I came across this photo of Laguna Verde, at the south most tip of Bolivia today. “It is one of several striking coloured lakes, including the Laguna Colorada, where the fiery red waters and arctic-white shores (a result of salt and borax deposits) contrast with the colour of the lake’s three species of breeding flamingos,” says the Telegraph’s travel writer, Tim Jepson. Butch Cassidy, and the Sundance Kid are buried in the cemetery of a local village, San Vicente and the lake is backed by the dormant 19,555ft Licancábur volcano. Let’s go.

my dhalia

August 28, 2019

It’s dhalia season, and while dhalias aren’t my favourite flower, I do find their multi-petaled faces so interesting. A few weeks ago, I bought a dhalia home that was as big as dinner plate. It only lasted two days before it started to wilt, but what joy it brought me. If you are on Instagram, please follow Floret Flowers. Erin Benzakein’s images are just so lovely. Dhalia after dhalia, of late.

water, water, everywhere

August 21, 2019

There’s nothing like swimming in salt water, but I do love the feeling of lake water, too. The water in the Adirondacks was beautiful, so fresh and clean. And a few days earlier, we were in Woodstock, diving into a swimming hole / bucket of ice cold water. Both felt wonderful. But unlike sea water, I find it disconcerting that you can’t see the bottom of lakes. I imagine snakes and leaches all around me. I imagine coming nose to nose with a trout. “Swimming in fresh water has its challenges, because you don’t have the buoyancy you have in the sea,” I can hear my Dad saying. He swims for hours in the sea, always has done. One day, I’d like to swim a major distance, be it lake, sea or ocean. I’d enjoy the challenge, and the feeling of being an amphibian for a day.
