Spanish steps

March 16, 2016

My friend Alison is on holiday in Barcelona, and this morning she sent me a photograph of row upon row of multi-coloured Kokua flats. I’d snap up five pairs if given the chance. Years ago, I walked the city’s gritty backstreets in handmade espardenya that I’d bought from a tiny family run shop in the heart of the old city. They were tomato red, and I wore them so much that the braided rope sole eventually came apart. I’ve since bought others in Greece, and a beautiful floral pair in Biarritz, but none were as comfortable, or as well made as my Barcelona beauties. If I ever return, I’ll buy a pair with laces, Dali style, and wear them as slippers around the house. Sí sí!
