Pot Head

March 3, 2016

All my pots are built by hand. I’ll try the wheel again one day, but for now, I enjoy the control and pace I experience from hand building. Because I lack skill (and patience) everything I make is a bit wonky and lopsided. But on the bright side, that’s just how I like pots to be. In fact, it’s the uneven, crooked, wonkiness of most things that I find charming –– the asymmetrical pattern in a rug, a pair of mismatched chairs, my daughter’s gloriously messed up teeth. I’m taking inspiration from Sydney-based artist, Holly Macdonald this week, whose beautifully painted ceramics are pure whimsy.

Portrait of a Lady

March 2, 2016

If I were to have my portrait painted, I might choose the Charleston-based artist, Leslie Weaver. Colour plays such a central role in my life, so Weaver’s colour-rich style seems fitting. I love how all her women have had a brush with Picasso. Plus, the thought of dramatic lashes, peach sized cheeks and a giant fruit basket on my head, is enough to make me hop on the next plane to South Carolina.

Oscar

March 2, 2016

“If you’ve got nothing nice to say about a person’s outfit, zip it,” was my grandmother’s motto (that she rarely stuck to). The show of dresses at the Oscar’s on Sunday was dreadful. Heidi Klum looked like she was wearing Dame Edna’s hair. Kate’s Bin liner? Rachel McAdams’ ill fitting creased silk drapery? Of the hundreds of frocks on the red carpet, it was the fabric on Mara Rooney’s Givenchy that made my heart swoon. And the delicately pleated open back of Olivia Wilde’s Valentino. The butter yellow of Alicia Vikander’s Vuitton was delightful, too, and I really did love all that fabulous applique on Cate Blanchett’s Armani. But come on, Hollywood. With all the choices available to you, you choose this?
