flowers on bricks

December 15, 2025

It began with a bunch of ranunculus from my Mum. There was a tenacious one in the mix that held on for weeks. As its delicate, pink petals started withering and losing their moisture, an intricate vascular network emerged that looked like the fine lines on an ageing face. I decided to photograph the petals on some bricks and so began the series, flowers on bricks. There was something about the delicate petals against the robustness of a brick that resonated with me. From daffodils to peonies, from anemones to amaryllis, over the course of the year I chronicled the passing seasons one flower at a time. When we start to pay attention to something it has a way of weaving its way into all areas of our life. My thoughts moved from dinner to dahlias, from the hydro bill to begonias, from an earache to crocuses. Flowers were everywhere. And I wasn’t just seeing them, I was feeling them. The cellular level joy that comes from being utterly absorbed in something you love.

rearrange

December 11, 2025

Every now and then I get the urge to re-arrange the furniture. Chairs, tables, lamps; everything gets shuffled about. In the re-arrangement there’s an unsettling that takes place that makes me think about our space and its contents differently. My perspective is shifted. I see things in a new light. My Mum used to say that thunder was Mary rearranging the furniture. To this day, I picture her pushing a large oak table across the room when I hear rumbles in the sky. Maybe that’s where my penchant for re-arranging comes from. My mum. She’s always moving things around. An old chair gets a fresh start by the window. A painting comes alive again in the guest loo. Somehow rearrange is an easier idea than change. It encourages us to work with what we have. Shift. Adjust. Re-distribute.
