maximal

February 26, 2020

I love the proportions of this little vignette, the small chair and the enormous vase stuffed full of grand hydrangeas. There’s a decadent sense of humour at play here. The lion faces, intricate mirror, textured wallpaper and patterned tile –– it’s all so over the top, and utterly divine.

square metre

February 13, 2020

I was everywhere today, and my little bones are weary. But I’ll leave you with this Italian Maiolica tile panel from the 15th Century because it’s so very beautiful. I love the muted colours and painterly lines. In another life, I would have covered my kitchen in this tile.

bright idea

February 4, 2020

There was a time when pick-me-ups came in the form of shoes and velvet trousers and pretty silk blouses. These days, I’m more likely to enter a lighting shop when I need a hit of retail therapy. Vintage sconces, sculptural pendents, chandeliers beautiful enough to wear; they all light me up. The iconic Serge Mouille mussel shell is the ultimate light. I’d be quite happy to live in it.

on tap

February 3, 2020

We’ve been talking about kitchen taps for months. Taps and door knobs and tiles. It’s the details –– the jewellery –– that are so fun to play around with. We oscillate between stainless steel, something streamlined and subtle, versus wonderfully over-the-top antique brass. The kitchen will have a Scandinavian feel, clean and spartan, so the idea of these decadent taps amuses me no end. Barber Wilsons outfits the English Royal family with their taps, and you know how very much I love the Queen.

sand dollar

January 23, 2020

Sand dollars are so beautiful. I remember diving for them as a little girl in Bermuda. Sand dollars and sea cucumbers! It’s extremely rare to find an intact sand dollar washed up on the beach. We brought back several fragments from our recent visit to Anna Maria Island, but it’s a dream of mine to find a whole one. In the meantime, I am dreaming of this chaise, which looks decidedly like a piece of a sand dollar.

facia

Colleen Leach’s ‘lady faces’ are just charming. There’s a splash of Matisse, and a sprinkle of Klee in so many of them. I especially love Leach’s painted bowls; I see them filled with nests of Carbonara. They’d look equally fabulous lined up on a kitchen wall, watching over the cook as she tosses in the cheese.

country kitchen

January 16, 2020

I like the earthy tones of this kitchen, the various shades of wood, and sand. The farmhouse sink is a lovely nude colour, so much more subtle and interesting than white. And that Lacanche oven! It’s all so rustic and warm, and yet modern. I imagine galettes and hearty stews being made in this kitchen. Served on ultra-minimal plates, of course.

coiled

January 15, 2020

I fell upon the beautiful work of ceramicist, Yasha Butler today. Each piece is made from coils, and has a look that is both minimal and ancient. The glazes make her large organic vessels look as though they sprung from the ground, after years of being buried there. And the forms, ultra fine and delicate, are decidedly modern. With their uneven edges, and sandy tones, Butler’s plates bring a sense of calm and contentment to the table.

jewel

January 8, 2020

Every now and then, I come across a room that’s too delightful not to share. The canopy! The mismatch of florals! The darling fireplace, and rose petals on its mantle. The terracotta tiles! One doesn’t see rooms this charming, this considered that often. It’s like something out of an old English story book.

play house

January 6, 2020

I am so inspired by the originality, colour, and sense of play in Jorge Pardo’s Mexico home. It’s hard not to swoon over the colouful cabinetry, whimsical pendents, turquoise windows, and hodge podge of tiles throughout. It brings together so many elements that I love in a home, all set among the leafy greens of his Merida garden. Just look at the grand ceiling height in the room below, the tall tomato red doors, and those hand painted walls.
