square space

December 6, 2018

These tiles by Aussie stylist, Sarah Ellison for Teranova are really lovely. I like the mix of earthy tones –– rust, brown and ochre. This design looks beautiful in a bedroom, and I’d love to see something like this in our entrance. The palette is Mediterranean, and the pattern feels very 50’s. Two big thumbs up in my sample book.

winter whites

November 30, 2018

This winter arrangement is so beautiful; a combination of dendrobium orchids, bittersweet, honeysuckle vine, narcissus and flannel flower. The wiry branch is dried viburnum greens and the fruits on the mantle are persimmon. It’s all so wild and whimsical, and such an imaginative, yet simple antidote to more traditional arrangements.

material matters

November 26, 2018

When I picture cement, I see floors, roofs, stairs, pillars and roads. And a massive concrete mixer. It’s not a sophisticated material, but these vases certainly are. They’re elegant, simple and bold. I picture a cluster of them on this fantastic terrazzo table. The vases are handmade in Greece, and can be used inside or out.

a room of one’s own

November 23, 2018

This here is a beautiful room. From the windows to the tiles, to the play of colour and light, there’s nothing I don’t like. Rooms like these aren’t designed all at once, they come together over time. The books, the magazines, photos and flowers; given the chance to walk around for a minute or two, I think one could learn so much about the person who lives here.

vamp shade

November 19, 2018

Whenever I see a wild wallpaper, or whimsical light, my mind immediately travels to the loo. The guest loo. These fabric chandeliers, hand made in Britain made from the finest dupion silks, are destined for the powder room of my dreams. They’re deco, they’re boudoir, they’re divine. It’s this Hibiscus pink one that I want, but the shades can be made to order in any colour (or colour combination) of the rainbow.

plated

November 19, 2018

So. I’m potty about these plates from La DoubleJ Housewives’. I just love the brilliant colours and whimsical designs. The original toile de Jouy print that appears on the Pavone collection was designed in the late 1700s, and inspired by the Mantero Silk Archives in Lake Como. The plates are too decadent for anything but foie gras and petit fours. Just don’t serve together, perhaps.

a little bit country

November 9, 2018

What a charming room with its mix of gingham and toile. I love the scalloped edge on the linens. This is just the sort of room one might retreat to with hot tea, cake and piles of Vogues and Maeve Binchy novels. I bet it smells like mothballs mixed with Lily of the Valley. And there may even be a leaky pipe or two in the en suite bathroom. But still, so charming.

concrete jungle

October 10, 2018

I really like the look of concrete surfaces in a home, even though my designer friends tell me it’s highly impractical. This home in Kuala Lumpur –– a very different climate –– is so striking. It belongs to architects Wen Hsia Ang and BC Ang, and it was this beautiful sink that first caught my eye. I love the shower, also. It may be a look that I’d tire of, especially is the greys of winter. But these guys  –– concrete is central to most of the couple’s projects –– elevate boring old concrete to another level.

bohemia

October 4, 2018

You hear the word tossed around often, but what makes a home authentically bohemian? The Spaces, an online magazine on architecture, design and art describes such homes as a “culmination of lives spent travelling, working, reading and learning. Paintings have origin stories; faded frescos sit behind modern art; prints and lampshades sit slightly ajar; curtains clash with cushions. More is usually more.”  Haute Bohemians, by Photographer Miguel Flores-Vianna explores some beautifully bohemian homes –– from castles to pied-a-terres –– around the world. “What seems significant in modern Bohemia is that every component of a home has significance to its owner. It goes without saying that no bohemian would hire an interior designer to ensure the result is au courant.” It’s the kind of book I could pore over for house, and then imagine my very own goat-house-turned-villa on a far flung island in Greece.

sofa so good

October 3, 2018

Here’s a sofa that’s stood the test of time. You’d think that Mario Marenco’s 70’s sofa was designed last week. The orange leather version has a retro feel, for sure, but it fits right in with contemporary design. I think it’s absolutely beautiful in this amber velvet, and no doubt a dream to sit on. Getting back up again, could be an issue.
