Fashion

in season

October 3, 2017

Fall colours –– rust, sage green and ochre –– are beautiful. But how about bursting into Autumn with a neon green oversized sweater or a pair of crepe de chine pants in wildflower pink? This coat, the colour of a Sicilian lemon, is pure joy.  And just look at the size of that dahlia. Dahlias come in high wattage colours, and so can we.

Nuts and bolts

October 2, 2017

I love to know the myths and legends behind iconic fashion items like a Birkin bag or a Rolex watch. This morning, I stumbled upon these little known facts about the Cartier Love Bracelet. “When the bracelet was first launched, Cartier gave pairs of them to some of the most famous couples of the 20th century including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Ali MacGraw and Steve McQueen, and Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti.” And did you know that some hospitals keep Cartier screwdrivers on hand in case they need to remove the pieces from patients in an emergency? Classic. Of course, there’s always room to individualize the bangle with a stack of quirky arm candy. I kind of like this combination of tennis bracelets and high wattage gold leaf. I also like it as is, simple and chic.

party animals

September 29, 2017

I was invited to a party the other day with an animal theme. My friend Katherine Holland was showcasing her fabulous photos of exotic rescue animals, and I realized I had not a single animal print to wear. In a wardrobe with more variety of print than a Kenzo runway, it’s surprising that there’s nary a cheetah, leopard or snake in sight. Claudia Cardinale often wore a leopard coat, and it’s crossed my mind to do the same. I’d choose a vintage one, and this boxy tailoring is just my thing. Another idea is to buy leopard scarf, and turn it into a turban when I feel like walking on the wild side.

shoe in

September 27, 2017

As of tomorrow when the temperatures drop to the more typical teens, our footwear will shift from Birks to brogues. I’m excited about buying a new pair of loafers. In the meantime though, I’m loving these sandals. It’s probably a good thing that I’ve got no idea where they’re from –– I’d be wearing them with wooley socks within a week.

Living doll

September 21, 2017

Who doesn’t love a big, ruffled collar? “Jersey con cuello bebé,” is how Spanish Vogue described this perfect, little sweater. Because yes, the collar does look like it belongs on a baby’s blouse. And that’s just fine, if you ask me.

No mean reds

September 14, 2017

Of all the fashion girls, it’s Giovanna Battaglia‘s style that I enjoy most. Her look is playful, colourful and fun. Last year, I posted this fabulous outfit, and a couple of days ago I spotted Battaglia on the streets of New York in that same fabulous candy stripe skirt. This time she embraced the reds, with sunnies, strappies, talons and a bag all in vivid shades of tomato. Clearly, there’s nothing mean about this girl’s mood.

Autumn whites

September 6, 2017

I love this look — the wide pant, woven belt, the loose fitting top — it’s all so easy and chic. This is how to take post labour day whites well into fall.

let’s polka

September 4, 2017

Anytime I see black and white polka dots, I think of a cocktail dress my Mum wore in the 80s that was fun and flirty and fantastically ruched. She even had black and white polka dot pumps to match. I’m quite sure she wore the outfit to Ascot, with a great chapeau, no doubt. I love the 80s for their sheer excess. It was all so over the top. Here is a very different take on all that. I like the compromise of playful polka dots and shoulder pads with clean beauty and an unfussy topper. Come to think of it, this may be my dream outfit to wear to the races.

Alice’s wonderland

August 29, 2017

If there’s a jeweller I’m most excited by these days, it’s Alice Cicolini. With such an eclectic range of influences –– from ancient Eastern traditions to Monet’s pastels –– it’s hard to not love her exuberant designs. Her temple Uzbek dome ring is pure drama, as is this exquisite tourmaline ring. It looks like a cocktail, or a Lalique vase filled with some magic potion. The mix of pink and yellow diamonds, white opals and a Tahitian pearl in this stunner is just divine. The meenakari enamelling under this chrysoprase is beautiful, too. With an endless budget, I’d wear two, maybe three a time. Why not?

classic

August 24, 2017

Few outfits beat jeans and t-shirt, especially when both are just right. Toothpicks from JCrew have been my go-to for a couple of years now, and I’ll never stop buying tees from there, either. I like the fit and the feel. Now, this t-shirt here, this is the best I’ve seen in a while. If I ever find it, I may never take it off.
