Inspiration

Rainbow

November 9, 2016

In the game of who’s coming to dinner, Iris Apfel always tops my list. And after listening to her speak in Toronto last night, I know she’d be a dream at any dinner party. Talk loudly and slowly –– she is hard of hearing –– and don’t bother with mindless, Kardashian chit chat. Avoid politics. Ask her where she bought her first pair of blue jeans, or which First Lady was most involved in re-decorating the White House (Pat Nixon). Don’t bother with selfie requests, just snap the pic. And if she compliments you on your outfit, smile, and tell her that you take inspiration from the fearlessness of fashion greats. She won’t stay for long –– she is 95, you know –– but half an hour is all you need. What a fabulous, sharp-witted, daring broad.

Birthdays

November 8, 2016

When I was about eight-years-old I met a magician who had the same birthday as me. Up until then, I’d assumed that I was the only person in the world blowing out candles on November 8th. Of all the people to share a birthday with! These days, I’m not one for fuss and fanfare on my birthday and I don’t need a big party or lavish gifts (well, If you insist). But, I do love the feeling of walking down a street of Autumn leaves knowing that it’s my day –– mine and the magician’s.

Pins

November 4, 2016

I can’t recall the last time I wore sheer black tights, maybe 1993, under a satin puff ball skirt at Dominique Westaway’s disco party.  Polka dots, like the ones on Clémence Poésy are a lovely choice, and lace is pretty, too. Lace legs make me think of my Mum, whose skinny pins always look so great in lacy tights and black suede pumps. Go on, let’s give sheers a go.

Stripes

November 3, 2016

I’m a sucker for colourful stripes, and these ones from Mara Hoffman are too fun to miss out on. These two girls look like a pair of deck chairs –– and that’s a compliment. Take a look the whole collection. It’s colourful, playful and effortless. And that’s a trifecta complete in my wardrobe.

Hairspray

November 2, 2016

For a girl who never uses hair product, rarely uses a hairdryer and barely uses a brush, I’d give ten bottles of my favourite shampoo for a chance to see the new Sam McKnight exhibition at Somerset House. Diana’s iconic 1990 crop –– McKnight. Madonna’s Bedtime Stories cover –– McKnight. Every supermodel who’s ever walked –– McKnight. “The transformative power of hair — how quickly and easily it can turn you into something or someone else — has always fascinated me. It keeps fascinating me today,” said Mr. McKnight. Tilda’s curls are out of this world, and so were Lindsey Wixon‘s for Chanel resort 2015. I’m sensing a theme here. Is it time I bought myself a curling iron?

splash

Now that the weather has changed, the swimming pool feels a tad less appealing. Just the chilly dash between the changing room and the pool is enough to turn me off. I’m half tempted to freeze my membership and splurge on this Lizzie Fortunato bag, instead. And what about this cute swimming tee by Yizi? Or maybe I should buy this fabulous Lou Taylor print for the kitchen. Because really, who needs a pool when you’ve got a tub?

Halloween 365

October 31, 2016

There are people out there who dress up like it’s Halloween every day of the year. They wear extreme eye makeup to the dentist, neon wigs to the grocery store, and outlandish hats to pick up the kids from school. Here’s to all you fearless originals out there. I salute you.

Pancake Day

October 28, 2016

There haven’t been many carrots or green beans consumed this week, so when Iole asked for pancakes for dinner, I initially scoffed at the idea. But breakfast for dinner is one of the greatest delights. And that’s just what they’ll have. (And I’ll try not to get pissed off when the batter hits the walls.)

Fruits & Flowers

October 27, 2016

These images of Vietnamese street vendors from above by Loes Heerink are so pleasing to me. I enjoy the repetition of pattern, and the colour blocking that takes place in many of them. I like how in this image, the vendor’s jacket and bag are a perfect colour match to the flowers she’s carrying. Heerink says it took hours and hours to capture each shot, and that I can believe.

WC

October 27, 2016

Every time I think I’d like an ultra modern bathroom, I see a picture that reminds me of my true aesthetic. White and minimally appointed, yes. Ultra modern, mais non. I’m in Marrakech, or on a Greek Cycladic island, where the the tub and the shower and the loo all meet. That’s the bathroom for me.
