On a small island a few hours north of the city stands an old pine cabin that was built by a family from Iowa in the 1930s. My sister-in-law and her husband bought the cabin a couple of years ago and it’s where they spend as much of the summer as they can. There’s a composting toilet, no electricity and the few appliances –– a fridge and a stove –– are from the 50s. Old recipes for corn bread and such are pinned to the walls, and the cupboards are stocked with decades-old household tools and necessities. Antique skis and a “Gone Fishing” sign hang above the tiny hallway to the bedrooms. Beyond updating the dock, they’ve kept the cabin as it always was. And It’s charming. Hanging out in a little log cabin among the stars and the lakes and the loons is a pretty lovely way to spend your summer. Lucky for us, we get to visit from time to time.

pixie

My hair has lived in a knot on top my head for as long as I can remember. Once in a pink moon, I wear it down. But lately, I’ve been thinking about a chop. I’ve always loved Audrey with her pixie cut, and Winona, Mia and Jean, too. I wore it that way a long time ago, and it looked pretty cute. But can I say Ta-Ta to le top-knot? It’s just hair, I know. But it does feel awfully bold –– far more so than when I cut it Farrow short in my 20s. It’s funny how attached we are to long hair, even when it’s always tied up in a messy nest. It’s the possibility of that pink moon, I think.
Done and Done
August 15, 2016
I recently discovered the work of Australian national treasure, Ken Done. Of course, it was his exuberant use of colour that drew me in, but I do enjoy the way he portrays his native land with such whimsy and naiveté. The Sydney Opera House, sail boats in the harbour, the Great Barrier Reef –– they are all captured with childlike enthusiasm. Magpie at the Opera House is so lovely and humorous, and the salmon pink of this 2004 Beach scene is a colour I adore. Take a look at the bathing suits and silk tops . As Vogue says, “you can hang a Done on your wall or a Done on yourself.”
Courage
August 12, 2016
Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, who mentored Zaha Hadid for many years, described the late, great “Queen of the Curve” like this: “She was somebody with a rare kind of courage. It was not a constructed courage, but an inevitable courage; she was just made that way. It was an almost physical thing.”
strawberries and cream
August 12, 2016
Last year, on Luma’s first birthday we were in London and my Mum ordered a very grand Victoria Sponge Cake with four tiers and heaps of fancy berries on top. It was delicious. Next week, for her second birthday my plan is to make one! We’ll stack up as many sponge cakes as possible, and slather layers of whipped cream and chunks of strawberries in between. I’m sure it would be tastier with mascarpone cream, but I can’t get too fussy. I may decide to add layers of jam, but I certainly won’t be making that from scratch. Ours will probably end up as an Eton Mess cake, but as long as there is cake, cream, berries and sugar, who cares?
Farfalla

When I saw this butterfly, my mind instantly darted to Carolina Herrera’s resort 2017 –– the print on this white fur jacket, and the print and movement of this dress. How wonderful to be a butterfly and flutter about in a ballgown all day, wouldn’t you say?
mix and match
August 10, 2016
As much as I enjoy a good clash of colour and print, I also appreciate a space with deliberate links between a fabric, flower and wall colour. This bedroom, in a vibrantly decorated cottage in Tulsa, is pure joy. I love the leafy wallpaper and corresponding cushion, and I love the pop of pink against the bright green. The clean white sheet highlights the white space in the leafy textile. The bed looks narrow, so I can only assume that these colourful people are also very small.
Lazy Days
August 10, 2016
Daybeds are such a decadent idea. To kick off your shoes half way through the day, sip a Mint Julep, read books, daydream, doodle or nod off for an hour or so, is an utter delight. Giambatista Valli has a daybed in his beautiful Paris home, as does Erin Fetherstone. I rather like this spot, too.
Technicolour dream

If I ever walked into this room, I’d quite possible stay forever. I might need to change the chandelier to something like this or this and I’d want to see a vase stuffed full of watermelon pink peonies on that little end table, but what a beautiful room this is. The question is what would I wear to sit in such a room?
Let’s Polka
August 8, 2016
I don’t believe that you can go out wearing polka dots and not have fun. There’s something childlike and whimsical about a polka dot print, even if the cut of the dress is demure and sleek. In fact, I rather like that juxtaposition. But then there is this, this, this and this, that assuming you have the humour and chutzpah to wear, will guarantee a good time.
