Top of the crops

July 12, 2016

With the button on my trousers landing bang on my belly button, I’m now much more inclined to buy a crop top or two. These ones created by artist and illustrator Isa Beniston are such fun. I adore the bright colours and playful style of her drawings. I’d wear mine over a pair of light wash jeans, or over a long, billowy skirt in apple green.

sink in

July 12, 2016

For a family that shares a bathroom, two sinks can save the day in the morning. This one here is pretty stunning. The brass hardware, geometric tiles, handsome wall sconces –– I like it all. Of course, the image does leave me wondering, where do they stash the toothpaste?

Rose Tinted

July 12, 2016

These pink bubble lamps just installed at the Louvre’s Café Mollien in Paris look like vintage dryers –– only more glamorous. I like the combination of the brushed gold with the rosé pink glass. The 4.5-meter high lamps are designed by Mathieu Lehanneur. No doubt Mona Lisa approves.

Fruit salad

July 7, 2016

I’m not a massive fan of fruit –– and I’m definitely not a fan of fruit in salads. Kiwi with my frisee? Non, merci. But I do like the look of this salad here. And this one is pretty, too. Just don’t expect me to eat them.

Ingredients

hairspray

July 6, 2016

I got a pedicure today from a woman wearing enough hairspray to set 1990. She was Joan Cusack (Working Girl) meets Julia Roberts (Mystic Pizza). I can’t remember the last time I wore hairspray — but I do love the smell of Elnett. It reminds me of my grandmother who carried a small bottle of it everywhere she went. As a child, hairspray signified glamour and lux to me, and I fantisized about smoking skinny cigarettes with rollers in my hair. Just for kicks, I may buy a bottle, backcomb my mop and see what the neighbours say.

shirty

July 6, 2016

I’m into oversized men’s shirts — white ones and blue ones made from the lightest, loveliest cotton. A playful hint of black lace that peeps through a pinstripe is as sexy as it gets. Sofia Coppola, who is always so chic and demure, wears Charvet shirts. I’ll raid my dad’s wardrobe. I bet he’s got some 30-year-old gems that’ll look just fine on my back.

waisted

July 5, 2016

There was a period of about a decade where, to the chagrin of my mother, my jeans sat way below my belly button. High waisted jeans –– her jeans –– were ridiculously uncool. And now I am a Mom, and my jeans, trousers and skirts sit comfortably at my waist. And frankly, I couldn’t be cooler. At least, my kids think so. For now.

Cook’s Kitchens

July 5, 2016

Although my own kitchen is pretty spotless (most of the time) I do appreciate the look of a well-used, well-worn, hodgepodge of a cucina. With its light aqua cabinets and rusty old stove, this one is brimming with charm. I like the white brick and wooden floors in this light and cheery one, too. This one is tiny, but I bet whoever it belongs to, whips up feasts in it. And the kitchen cabinets in this one are up-cycled meter boxes brought back from the Australian outback.

If my children saw this woman they would think she was a witch. And they may well be right. There’s something fabulously dark, mystical and dramatic about her. She has an air of Karl Lagerfield. And perhaps the German accent, too. “I don’t like standard beauty –– there is no beauty without stangeness,” said Kaiser Karl.

frocks

June 29, 2016

If you’re on the hunt for easy breezy dresses for summer, you may want to have a look at Aussie designer Sarah Hardie. From simple, solid coloured wrap dresses to embroidered frocks fit for a gypsy, it’s hard to stop at just one. I like the Gemma dress (with or without a belt) and the Ibiza dress is lovely, too. And the little girl’s clothes –– blouses, rompers and dresses –– are very sweet.
