Textile Me

January 13, 2017

If you have a fabric fetish like I do, then rock on over to Australian photographer, Martyn Thompson colour rich loft in Manhattan.  Glorious wallpapers, beautiful hand-stitched embroideries, and vibrant murals painted by Thompson’s partner, artist Dove Drury Hornbuckle make for a space that is vibrant, decadent and utterly unique. Thompson’s own textiles, wallpapers and home furnishings are scattered about the place, as are Hornbuckle’s paintings and ceramic creations. If you ever get invited over, be sure to wear face paint and flowers in your hair. You’ll fit right in with the décor.

Al Fresco

January 10, 2017

Some of the most beautiful frescos I have ever seen are in Florence, where I lived for a year in my late teens. My friend Zelmira rented a beautiful apartment in Palazzo Pucci on Via dei Pucci and her ceilings were covered in cherubs and clouds and palm leaves. I’ve always loved the romance and decadence of frescos or murals at home. In fact, inspired by Zelmira’s walls and Barbara Klunder‘s large Arcadian mural at Union in Toronto, I’ve thought of commissioning something similar for our living room. This room, by Johann Bergl, is magical to me.

Suits

January 10, 2017

I’ve never had a ski suit that I love. As a kid, I wore a lot of puffy, pastel-coloured one-pieces that were cinched at the waist. As a teenager, I moved to black salopettes with a baggy ski jacket, a beanie and a cigarette. By adult life, I’d given up the slopes for sun and gluvine. But if I were to hit the piste again, my dream is to look something like this. In reality, I’d opt for a jacket that throws back to my early ski days, like this retro inspired one with a pair of black ski leggings. A few runs would be enough before I’d hear the call of après ski echoing from mountain to mountain.

Gold

January 6, 2017

My mum and Iole watched Houseboat, with Cary Grant and Sophie Loren, over the holidays. I sat in for the second half, just in time to see Loren in that sensation gold lurex dress. It takes a certain amount of va va voom to pull of lurex, and Loren, of course, overflows with voooooom. I had my eye on several lurex pleated skirts over the holidays. I kept seeing them in shop windows –– Zara, Kate Spade, Gucci et. al. –– styled with a festive sweater. I resisted the urge, but I am tempted to snap up a pair of gold lamé leggings just for the fun of it. I may not have the voom, but va va, I have plenty of.

Hodgepodge

January 4, 2017

I was sifting through The Selby today, and I came across the colourful home of designers, Robert Geller and Ana Lerario Geller. It’s just the sort of hodgepodge of a home that I love with stacks of books, eclectic art and lighting, richly patterned rugs and chic herringbone floors. They have two girls –– Luna and Anis –– and the children’s art and toys are scattered freely around the house. Sure, there’s some heavy styling going on, but I get the feeling that this is a fun place to live.

colour me

January 3, 2017

Most people have a colour –– or a palette, at least –– that best represents them. My friend Alison is drawn to the seafoams and aquas of the ocean, while my mother-in-law loves the ochres and rusts of Fall. I’d say my palette is abundantly red and pink. The reds –– from ruby to vermilion –– have long been with me, but the pink is somewhat more recent. And these days, I can’t get enough of it. Now, put the two colours together, and I’m in flash, clash heaven.

Turner’s Venezia

December 29, 2016

When I think of Turner I picture his seascapes –– brown, moody and luminous. This paining, of Turner’s Bedroom in the Palazzo Giustinian in Venice, has none of the drama of his seascapes but is so beautiful to me. I love the colours and the light and the hand-painted ceiling. The painting is part of the Tate’s collection and although it’s not currently on display, visitors can make an appointment to see this or any other artwork in the gallery’s archives. How wonderful is that? To enjoy a personal viewing of a painting one loves.

slothing

December 29, 2016

These are the days for hiding under a blanket with a good mini-series and a vat of homemade leftover Turkey soup. Make sure to choose a blanket that compliments your complexion. You never know who may pop in for a bowl of soup.

Placement

December 29, 2016

It’s at this time of year that my grandmother’s silver comes out, that we use our special plates and that I fill the home with clementines and red blooms. There’s something lovely about sitting down to a table cloth. It’s not for every day, but what a delight to dine this way from time to time. This is such a pretty Christmas setting –– red ranunculus and Moroccan tea glasses, and the smartest monogrammed napkins. Can I bring a guest?

Fairy Frock

December 25, 2016

If the sugar plum fairy is looking for a dress, I’ve found just the one. It’s Blumarine, and between the ruffled epaulets, billowy sleeves and the softest, sequin covered pink, I challenge anyone to find a more perfect fairy frock. There is a long version also, but a romper is easier to fly in. I do believe in fairies, I do, I do, I do.
