rebel rebel

April 16, 2019

There’s a flower shop in London, Rebel Rebel, that designs arrangements that are a big, bold and wild expression of love. The style is mad cap and exuberant. And no bouquet is ever the same. I came across this image today, and it reminded of Rebel Rebel’s approach to blooms. It’s a wild English garden smooshed into a vintage Porche.

home

In all its lopsided glory, I have loved living in our house. Its been joyful, chaotic and intense. If the walls could speak they’d say, “we’ve done all we can to house these weird and wild people, it’s time to build new ones.” I am grateful to every wonky window sill and creaky floorboard, the cracks in the walls, and wobbly banister, all the flaws and foibles of this little house of ours. We moved in as two, without a stick of furniture, and now we’re five with more stuff than we know what to do with. Building something new in its place will be a challenge. Let’s hope houses have souls and this one stays put.

white space

Just look at this apartment in a 1914 Belle Époque building in Antwerp. The archway between the rooms is heavenly. I’m not one for house plants, but these ones bring whimsy and colour with every leaf. Please note the lighting –– sleek and minimal –– and the abundance of white, unadorned walls.

After Picasso

I’ve written about Marrakech-based LRNCE before, specifically the company’s line of textiles. More recently, it’s their ceramics that I’m into. I love the jugs –– crude and quirky –– and the plates adorned with bold, irregular patterns. Each piece is made by hand on the outskirts of Marrakech. This vase is a bit of a dream; I see it filled with white Agapanthus.

house in the country

Doesn’t this look like the coziest place to have a snooze. The stone, the Persian, the fluffy white linens. Knowing me, I’d hit my noggin’ on the rafters. I bet we’re somewhere in the English country side. Rainy days doing nothing, with an endless supply of books, films and Tetley’s. Sounds nice.

middle century

Have a gander round this lovely mid-century home in southern California. It was designed in the late 50s by Richard Neutra, but so much of the design remains relevant today. The kitchen boasts the original wood panelling, plus an original Thermador In-Wall Oven. I really like the wood against the black flooring. The bedroom is my favourite room –– it feels like a tree house. Who wouldn’t be happy writing letters (or even paying bills) at that desk?

glass act

I came across the work of Ingeborg Lundin today, a mid-century Swedish glass artists famous for her hand blown “apple” design. I love her textured work, these beautiful blue and green vases, etched with organic designs. And this long stem vase, (pictured) is so very elegant.

Repeat

My friend and fellow potter, Pat told me about a pottery studio based out of North Carolina called East Fork. I love the simplicity of the work — clean forms, unfussy glazes — and I could see myself snapping up several pieces. It’s run by Paul Matisse, great-grandson of the late, great Henri, and his wife, Connie and this quote really resonated with me. “Proficiency comes from repetitions,” Matisse says. “Where some potters might throw, say, 10 mugs in a ‘run’ before moving on to another form, we’ll throw 200. This style of throwing allows the potter to get into a flow, the pots coming off the wheel with ease, grace, and consistency.”

let’s polka

August 6, 2018

Yes to polka dots, yes to pleats, and yes to dramatic, dangly earrings. There’s nothing I don’t love about this outfit. I imagine this shoe, and an invitation to dance under a full moon and one hundred pink parasols.

step by step

I like a staircase with curves, sinuous lines, and soft edges. This one here is kind of wonderful, and so is this one. This staircase here is pure drama, and so is this one at the Hermes store in Miami. There is softness, warmth and romanticism that curves bring to a home. Plus. they’re so much more fun to slide down.
