Baby love

July 18, 2016

Baby’s breath is a flower with a bad rap, mostly because it keeps such close company with red roses. On its own though, as a delicate bridal bouquet or planted in terracotta pots, it can be quite lovely. At a wedding we went to on Porto Heli a couple of weeks ago, the couple stood under a custom boxwood altar covered in tiny buds of baby’s breath. It was really quite stunning. It helped that the bride –– 6-feet tall in Elie Saab –– was such a beauty.

pool party

July 14, 2016

If there was an outdoor pool in walking distance of our home, I’d be in it all the time. Salt water, and I’d move in. Instead, I’ll have to settle for Luma’s plastic kiddie pool.  One day, we may put a pool in the back garden. Laps in the summer, and dancing on ice in the winter. Yes, this one here will do nicely.

sink in

July 12, 2016

For a family that shares a bathroom, two sinks can save the day in the morning. This one here is pretty stunning. The brass hardware, geometric tiles, handsome wall sconces –– I like it all. Of course, the image does leave me wondering, where do they stash the toothpaste?

Rose Tinted

July 12, 2016

These pink bubble lamps just installed at the Louvre’s Café Mollien in Paris look like vintage dryers –– only more glamorous. I like the combination of the brushed gold with the rosé pink glass. The 4.5-meter high lamps are designed by Mathieu Lehanneur. No doubt Mona Lisa approves.

Cook’s Kitchens

July 5, 2016

Although my own kitchen is pretty spotless (most of the time) I do appreciate the look of a well-used, well-worn, hodgepodge of a cucina. With its light aqua cabinets and rusty old stove, this one is brimming with charm. I like the white brick and wooden floors in this light and cheery one, too. This one is tiny, but I bet whoever it belongs to, whips up feasts in it. And the kitchen cabinets in this one are up-cycled meter boxes brought back from the Australian outback.

pineapples

June 21, 2016

When I was pregnant with Iole, I ate so much pineapple that I’m turned off it for life. I do love to see them in home decor though. Gilt sconces in a hallway, a fancy salad bowl, (we snapped up one of these at a vintage shop in the east end) and a guest loo covered in big, green pineapples. And for a chance to hang out in this giant pineapple, well, I’d even drink a piña colada for that.

Blue Period

June 20, 2016

One of my favourite self portraits is Picasso’s self portrait during his blue period. I saw the painting years ago on a school trip to the Picasso Museum in Paris and I loved it immediately. It’s true that I gravitate towards hot colours –– red, orange and schiaparelli pink –– but I do love the cool and calm of blue. With every shade of sea and sky, this room caught my eye this morning. It’s just the place for reading and writing and imagining deep sea swims.

Wayne meets Matisse

June 10, 2016

Two of my favourite artists are Picasso and Matisse, and I tend to gravitate towards anything in the spirit of either artist. So you’ll understand why I really like the work of Brooklyn artist, Wayne Pate. Both Madame Blue and Goddess would fit in effortlessly on our picture wall, as would this whimsical paloma. There is a strong Grecian influence –– in the abundance of urns and olive branches and overall colour palette –– that appeals to me, also. I wonder if Pate (who is married to designer, Rebecca Taylor) has seen the work of Alekos Fassianos? Take a look at his lampshades –– lovely for both home and head!

Lemon slice

June 7, 2016

I have no idea if this is a hotel, or a private residence, but it’s just the sort of place you want to live your island life in. It doesn’t get better than lemon curd windows, shutters and scalloped edge awnings. It’s lemon meringue pie in the tropics. I can only imagine a lot of fabulous on the inside, too.

Fabric Land

May 27, 2016

This morning, my friend and fellow textile fanatic, Alison and I went to the Textile Museum‘s annual summer sale to rummage through bolts, boxes and bins of fabric. “Are you looking for something in particular?” asked her friend Dori as we stood in line outside Artscape. “No, but I’ll know when I see it!” I couldn’t resist a bolt of coral fabric covered in tropical birds and flowers, and at $2 a piece, the Navajo inspired cushion fabrics in pinks and blues had to be mine. My favourite find was metres of heavy white satin decorated with butterflies, ladybirds and bumbles bees, perfect for dresses for the girls or a ballgown for me! Alison snapped up a few metres of pale blue toile, and a gorgeous print of aqua florals for her home in Nova Scotia. All so beautiful, and so much fun. Next year, I’ll bring a bigger bag.
