winter wooley

March 9, 2019

Is this jumper following me, of am I following it? It’s the sleeves that have me swooning most of all. It’s never too late to splurge on a winter woolly. As we know too well, April can bring spring one day, and winter the next.

mutard

March 8, 2019

I see the flowers, they’re delightfully springy, but what I’m really looking at is the mustard pulley on that girl. I love the volume in the sleeves, and the chunkyness of the cable knit. The colour is one of my favourites. Soon enough, we’ll all be in flip flops and woolly sweaters. Soon.

in the bag

March 5, 2019

It’s always a little adventure, to delve into a handbag I haven’t used in months, years. This morning I found one in the laundry hamper –– goodness knows why I put it there –– filled with coins, pens, Bermuda dollars and prenatal pills the size of kidney beans. It was last used in 2014, I’m pretty sure. I also found a scrap of yellow paper, with my husband’s notes the week after our first baby was born. “Ask the doctor about swaddling.” Very often, I find an order of service slipped into the pocket of a bag. I love to re-read the poems and passgaes the couple chose. Velveteen Rabbit. Winnie the Pooh. Sometimes, I’ll find an old lipstick, a shell or some sugared almonds at the bottom of a bag. And once in a while, I’ll discover a pair of earrings or a ring I haven’t worn in years. I like to go through old receipts and business cards, notes to myself, and scribbles from my kids. I toss most of it, but there’s always a gem or two to be found.

party dress

February 19, 2019

What a delightful frock! My three-year-old daughter has dresses similarly celestial, romantic and I feel I must have one, too. The pink is so pretty, but I think I’ll look like the Good Witch of the North. Best go with nude. Now, what to wear underneath? A simple slip, or a white t-shirt and denim shorts?

never a bridesmaid

February 11, 2019

To my great disappointment, I’ve never been a bridesmaid. I kind of love the idea of the ile flottant dress, and all the frothy trimmings that go with it. I love the idea of a gaggle of girls, in matching up-dos, crammed into the backseat of car. All my close friends either opted for no bridesmaids, or tiny ones in fairy wings. I get it. Eight shrimp coloured frocks is not for everyone. I didn’t go to a prom –– it’s not a thing in England –– and I was never part of a fancy bridal party, so clearly, I’m aching to wear the Molly Ringwald gown. My neighbour has one in Disney cake pink, so maybe I’ll just borrow that, and prance around the house in it.

animal instinct

February 5, 2019

How can anyone not love these quirky, porcelain rings from Nach Bijoux? The peacock, the parrot and the rhino are my favourites, but I’d be happy with any animal on the arc. I kind of want to wear one on each finger. Have a look at the pins, too. That little frog is calling my name. Ribit.

la la land

February 1, 2019

This is my summer wardrobe –– a Mexican moomoo, straw hat and sunnies –– and I’m missing it. So, to feel a little brighter I’m scrolling through Ulla Johnson’s SS 19, and imagining myself on a beach in this white ruffled frock. Wait a minute, I can do better than that. How about standing on the bow of a 100 foot sailboat of the coast of Costa Rica wearing this metallic jacquard silk number? With no sun spots and thick, flowy hair. Yeah, that’ll do.

uniform

January 28, 2019

Here, right here, is my dream outfit. Chanel flats, (nude on black) scruffy jeans, good cashmere, and a blouse with frills, lace and bows. There is nothing I would add or take away. It’s perfect.

cap couture

January 23, 2019

In another life, I wore Dior Swimming caps and Chanel snow boots. In this life, I wear Speedo and Blundstone. This week, Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri capped her models in bejewelled silicone as they walked down the runway. I do smile at the thought of my head bobbing along the lanes of my local salt water pool covered in sequins and sparkle. The black netted veils added to the drama. Chanel and Valentino have also thrown caps into the ring, so it won’t be long until the high street follows suit.

layer cake

January 12, 2019

I adore the Gucci dress that Saoirse Ronan wore to the NYC premier of Mary Queen Of Scots. It’s so decadent and delicious. It looks like a wedding cake. I could do without the beaded heart and the writing on the hem, but that’s just me. But all the ivory ruffles and pleats are a bit of dream. There’s a theatricality to the dress, particularly the collar, that I found fitting for the part of a Queen.
