top of the knots

November 21, 2018

After a short break, six months or so, my hair is back in it’s natural habitat, scrunched up on the top of my head. But as the festive season begins, I feel that plain, old hair elastics won’t do. You may catch me with a pretty silk foulard around my head, or maybe I’ll find a beautiful, antique comb to stick in my top knot. A silk ribbon is always a good idea, the thicker the better. And one can never go wrong with diamonds.

I’m a fan of Mirka Mora‘s work; it’s zany, weird and original. The Australian artist died this year, but no doubt, she’ll continue to inspire for years to come. Take a look at Aussie label, Gorman’s latest Mora-inspired collection of printed blouses, dresses and jumpsuits. The accessories, like this colour rich tote and silk scarf, are a statement unto themselves. Take a closer look at the prints –– foxes, bunnies, bosoms and blossoms –– it’s all so wonderfully bizarro.

How fabulous is this ivory extravaganza of a bow? I know bows not for everyone, and this one could never be taken out to dinner, but just to try this blouse on would make me happy. I think I’d wear it with black tuxedo pants and bare feet and then dig into a bowl of spaghetti Bolgnese, just to see if I can pull it off.

d’accord

November 19, 2018

I haven’t worn cords since my late teens –– I had several flared pairs at university that I wore with trainers and woolly polo necks –– and these from Céline make we want to revisit the whole look. I love how thick the corduroy is. A much less expensive alternative is this mustard pair from JCrew. The cord is 70s car seat, and I love it.

It’s a certain girl who’s drawn to Susie Cave’s line. Cate Blanchett, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Florence Welch are all fans of The Vampire’s Wife. The fabrics –– Liberty florals, jewel toned velvets and disco shimmer –– all whisk me back to the 70s. I picture kidney shaped velvet love seats and chintzy arm chairs. I picture English pubs and electric discos. I like this dainty floral pattern paired with metallic silk ruffles, and I can’t imagine a more fabulous Christmas dress than this one made from shimmery red silk metallic chiffon.

abstract expressionist

Colour and print always stop me in my tracks. And I love this look from Chitose Abe. It’s Sacai Spring 2019 ready-to-wear, and while I wouldn’t rock this get-up head-to-toe, I admire that she can. This dress is a walking work or art. And this top is a sophisticated, (beautifully crafted) take on something I might have made as a child. Have a look. You may be inspired.

Pretty in pink

November 4, 2018

Just look at this dress from Cecilie Bahnsen’s SS ’19 collections. It’s ridiculously perfect. Pink like a marshmallow, puffy like a prom dress, demure and sexy at the same time. I love the styling –– a low ponytail and plain and black plimsoles. Dreamy dress, non?

trick or treat

October 30, 2018

If in doubt about what to wear tomorrow night for the most ghoulish day of the year, take inspiration from fashion history, starting with this 1920s, bias cut frock in the prettiest shade of pumpkin. Next up, is anything blood red and decadent, maybe satin or crushed velvet? Izabela Rossellini is one to turn to any day of the year, but this black tulle head sculpture is pure drama. A cool white suit, makes you the chicest ghost on the block.

winter babouche

October 25, 2018

I’ve been wearing my babouche with thick socks lately, but it’s really not doing it for me. My feet are always cold. These Jenni Kayne’s are more than I’d like to spend on a slipper, especially ones that I can’t take to the sidewalk, but they do look exceptionally cozy and warm. The heel folds down in homage to the Moroccan slipper and they’re a 100 per cent shearling/suede mix. Sold. Almost. Thinking about it.

Neck line

October 24, 2018

I’ve been a fan of Annie Costello Brown’s Matisse inspired danglers for a while, but today this necklace caught my eye, and well, I want it. I don’t wear necklaces, but this one is great. Simple, a bit bohemian and beautifully asymmetrical. It’s on my wish list. along with a camel and a small Benetti yacht.
